Custom metalwork can define a stair, divide a room, or give an entry its character. The useful starting point is the piece’s purpose: what it needs to support, where it meets the building, and how people will use it.

Start with the opening

A railing, door, or partition has to meet the surrounding architecture. Share photographs and available drawings, along with how the piece will be used. Dimensions, attachment points, hardware, and adjacent finishes need to be resolved together before fabrication.

A focused metalwork commission can fit within a larger project led by your architect or designer. Establish who supplies the design and who confirms the site dimensions, surrounding construction, and installation requirements.

Choose the character of the work

Handworked details can introduce organic shapes and variation. Straight steel lines and repeated geometry can make a quieter architectural statement. Neither approach needs to be chosen in isolation from the room.

Breuder’s Vine Stairwork uses forged grape and leaf details around the stair. Wine Cellar Doors combines steel, glass, and hardware at a residential opening. These are different ways to make the metalwork part of the space.

Discuss finish and care

Material, exposure, handling, and maintenance all affect the finish decision. An indoor partition and an outdoor railing have different conditions to address. Ask how the proposed finish will be prepared, how it should be cleaned, and what future maintenance may involve.

Discuss the color, texture, and sample finish in relation to the adjoining stone, wood, glass, or painted surface.

Connect the shop to the site

A well-considered piece needs a workable installation plan. Discuss how it will reach the opening, what surrounding work must be ready, and who coordinates the fit. Those questions are part of the design conversation.

Explore custom metalwork by Breuder. Metal-only projects are welcome; start with the piece you have in mind and where it will be installed.

From Essay To Conversation

Talk through the work you have in mind.

Tell Len what you want to change and where the project is. He’ll follow up to discuss whether Breuder fits the work and what the next step would involve.
